Fish keeping 101

You just brought home your a fish - how exciting!

Now comes the part no one at the pet store explained: keeping the water hygienic. Don’t be alarmed, it’s way easier than it sounds…

Every fish gives off waste (yes, even the tiny ones), and that waste quickly turns the water toxic if it isn’t cleaned out. That’s where biological filtration comes in. A good filter doesn’t just trap debris, it works like a tiny ecosystem by balancing chemicals with good bacteria that keep your fish healthy and the water safe.

That’s exactly what our modular card was designed for. Instead of disorganized setups or the uncertainty of waiting weeks for an aquarium to cycle, we use a patent pending, scalable, and modern design that gives you beneficial bacteria on day one. No uncertainty, no waiting, just happy fish owners.

Just place it and relax.
You get to enjoy your new ecosystem by skipping right to the fun part.

Flowcard vs other options

Flowcard users should save 20-30 days, just as many chemistry tests, the lives of any fish that would have been used to cycle, and all that stress that comes with it.

Tanks using Flowcard also don’t need additional bacterial additives or biological media meant for the reduction of ammonia or nitrite.

For advanced users: Flowcard was designed to be scaled based on expected ammonia outputs. Our testing indicates .75 mg or more ammonia is removed per card in ideal situations.

Ongoing Maintenance

The modular card solves your biological filter needs but other needs persist.

  • In order for the modular card to work properly, the water must be highly aerated. A small bubbler or light surface disruption is often not enough aeration. Adding a protein skimmer or sump is a great way to increase aeration.

  • Keeping the correct nutrient levels and pH for your pets is essential. Also important is the removal of any harmful chemicals like Fluoride and Chlorine from any water used.

  • The modular card is preloaded with nitrifying bacteria. This ensures the ammonia produced by your pets is transformed into nitrite and then nitrate.

It is crucial to ensure the levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate are at safe levels for your inhabitants at all times. Regular testing and water changes are requirements.

  • To prevent cloudy water or debris from entering the modular card’s structure, a good mechanical filter such as floss should be used (ideally just before the cards in the filter setup). Additionally, protein skimmers are highly recommended for removing additional waste products.

  • Sometimes water changes aren’t enough to rid the aquarium of smells or harmful chemicals. (Tip: Carbon is a common media used to remove these types of contaminants.)

  • A great pet owner employs reasonable quarantine procedures to keep their plants and animals safe.
